Don’t break the chain.

The past few days have been busy for me, and my regular habits have been interrupted. So, I haven’t had the writing time that I’ve carved out over the past few weeks. I’m reminded of one of Gretchen Rubin’s strategies for habit change from her book Better Than Before: Don’t Break the Chain.

I’ve been blogging daily for 25 days. I don’t want to break the chain. I didn’t have time to write the post I wanted, so I’m going to write the post I have time to post.

I’ve been meditating for 10 days. Even though it’s busy, I can take 5 minutes to focus on my breath to keep the chain going.

I’ve wanted to meditate daily for a long time, but it helped to find the right tool. This meditation app, Insight Timer, has a feature that tells you how many consecutive days you’ve meditated. Boom. Just like that, the habit clicked into place.

I’ve wanted to blog daily for…years maybe. For lent this year, I decided to kickstart the habit. Can I blog for all the days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday? At the end of that time, I can decide if I like it. (Spoiler: I think I like it).

Will I keep these streaks forever? Probably not. But, I can keep going for one more day.
