blessing the boats by Lucille Clifton

Welcome back.

A week of hurricane preparation, waiting and more has brought me back to this blog. This week, the Academy of American Poets shared this lovely gem of a poem by Lucille Clifton on their facebook page, and I feel like Lucille Clifton says everything best.

blessing the boats

(at St. Mary’s)

may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that

This is not a great quality video, but I thought Bill Murray’s reading of this poem was worth sharing.
